A day in the life of Lindsay

I don't know how well your children sleep, but this little cutie just doesn't! So, this is the beautiful little face I woke up to today...what an awesome way to start my day :)
The flash was apparently very bright.

Next line of business in the morning, coffee, a MUST! I never used to like coffee and couldn't even imagine drinking it, but that Keurig changed my life. LOL

Yes, their eyes are open, but no, they are not really awake yet. Do you think they would even notice if I turned their cartoons off???

Time to hurry these two cuties along a bit, it's a school day! Breakfast time

They are ready! How handsome are these two, I mean really?

Yep, thanks for the warning...Iowa winters, ugh. Every time the cold shows it's ugly face I seriously wonder why I don't move somewhere, ANYWHERE warmer??? Let's be honest, I would miss having seasons I guess.

My sweeties playing before lunchtime

Carter loves the slide

Peek-a-boo pretty girl!

His belly is full and school must have worn him out...

Really? Hilarious...

Time to get to work and take advantage of sleeping kiddos!!! Yikes, that's a lot of dishes. Let's not even talk about the laundry downstairs calling my name. That can wait.

Now that the house work is done I get to have a few minutes of fun before the kiddos wake up and the real fun starts back up.

Want a sneak peek of what's inside!?

What do you think!?

...and she's back! Fully charged and ready to play. Feeding baby, what a good mama she is

My boys...get to work setting the table for dinner soldiers!

Snacks then bath and brush teeth before bed, I think so

Look at these guys sneaking in a few extra snuggles...LOVE them!!! This is my whole world and I couldn't imagine one single thing being different. I am one lucky girl :)

I found this and think it is just the perfect thing to end my day with...

Snow day with the kiddos! -Carly

How did everyone like the snow storm the week before Christmas? After living in Florida for years before moving to the QC, I am less than enthused by messy wet cold weather but dont worry, my kids love it!
As soon as it started snowing, my son was asking to "pwwweeeaaase go outside"
We waited to Dad to get home to get bundled up

I waited inside with baby girl while the boys went out to shovel the driveway and sidewalk.
I think if Fiona could talk, she would say "Pwweeeaaase go outside too"
This girlie wants to do everything her brother does. Isnt she rocking that bow/glitter headband? cute, right?!

MJ worked hard to get the sidewalk cleaned off before deciding it was just too windy!
(PS: He initially had mittens on but ripped them off as soon as he got outside and kept ripping them off)

So all in all, our first snow day this winter was a success. A little playing in a lot of snow and some hot cocoa to top it off!!!

OK, this wasnt the snow day (it was xmas eve, but I had to post it bc I giggle everytime I see Fiona's NEW smile....I'm not kidding, this is how she smiles when she sees the camera now....I'm dying, too cute.

It seems so crazy that we spend months planning the perfect Christmas for our kids, and it’s all over in a day!! But it is the most wonderful day of the year, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Just because it’s over, doesn’t mean things are back to normal though… where is all this stuff going to go?! Santa should send some elves on Christmas night to get things back to normal for mom and dad!! We can wish… here are some tips to help you keep your sanity after the holidays…

One in, one out. For every new item, choose one that you no longer need. If the kids get a new movie, see if you can find one that they have outgrown or don’t watch anymore. Give it to someone you know would love it, take it to Goodwill, or see if you can trade it in. If they can’t find a similar item to part with, encourage them to find SOMETHING they can let go.

All those empty boxes, what to do with them?! Don’t send them to the recycling!! They came filled with new items for your home, and if you are following the “one in, one out” rule, fill them with the items that need to go!! Make a goal of filling at least HALF of your empty boxes with items to sell or donate.

If you’re having trouble deciding to keep a toy or not, ask yourself “Can I remember the last time I saw my child playing with this?”, “If all of my child’s toys got lost, would he miss this one?” “Do we have something similar?” “Do I know a child or family who would get more enjoyment out of this toy than we do?”

Find a purposeful place for new items, sort their “area” as you go. When we come home on Christmas night, all the gifts go in one central area, like the loveseat or under the tree. One by one, each item should get a new “home”, so it is not forgotten or lost. My son got several new books for Christmas, but they aren’t going on the bookshelf until I sort through all the books he already has. Books are one of my exceptions to the “one in, one out” rule (a child can never have too many books!!) but there are definitely some that should be passed on to my 8 month old nephew!! Tell older kids they can’t take their new toys into their room until they “make room”.

Group and LABEL similar items. This probably already happens with a lot of toys, like Legos and books. Start with the toys that seem to be most difficult to keep organized. Killian is really into super hero’s, and he has a ton of masks and props that he likes to play with, but he was having trouble finding exactly what he was looking for. I put all of this super hero toys in the same Tuff Tote, so he can dump it out and find what he is looking for, and put it all back easily when he is finished. Kids are more likely to keep things organized when you make it easy for them, so label everything!! Take a picture, print an image you find online, or use a label maker.

Rotate toys. My son has way too many toys for one little boy, even after purging everything he has outgrown or doesn’t play with. When this happens, even the toys he loves can get forgotten at the bottom of the toy box!! A simple solution to this is to create a rotation of toys. I have heard of some moms having a different tote for each day of the week, and the kids get a new box every day to keep them occupied.

Set aside toys that you are unsure about getting rid of. When spring cleaning comes around you can think twice. More than likely, your first instinct was right, and you won’t feel guilty about sending them to Goodwill.

Create a “gift closet” for re-gifts. This doesn’t have to be an actual closet, but set aside a shelf somewhere of items that would be suitable to gift to someone else that you may already own, or just know you will never use. I actually don’t have a single thing to add this Christmas (my family was so thoughtful in their gift giving J) but I know there are things that are on the gift shelf that should probably just be donated, as I haven’t gifted them yet.

Designate a box for returns. Put it in your coat closet or near the front door so you can grab it when you are going out and about. Tape an envelope to it to keep receipts, or tape the receipts to each item if you can.

Questions answered regarding VINO!!!

Meet our Resident Wino! She has worked in the Wine Industry for years and has lots of great tips on how to look like a wine connoisseur even if the only alcoholic beverage you actually enjoy is a white zin or frozen margarita:)

Don't worry Ladies, she doesnt judge, she totally sees me put ice cubes in a glass of red and resists the urge to laugh.

So feel free to ask any questions to our Auntie Vino!!!

Hi TCOT readers,
It’s Christmas crunch time! With less than a week to go, stopping in the mall to finish up my shopping sounds about as appealing as paying expedited shipping to get internet items ordered in time for Christmas delivery. This is actually only a small factor in my decision that all the “Over 21s” on my shopping list will be receiving my favorite gift to give (and receive) – a little vino!
There are plenty of perks to giving wine for a holiday gift:

- Wine is a great host/hostess gift to bring to whoever is welcoming you over for the holidays.
- Outside of people who do not drink at all, just about everyone can appreciate a bottle of wine whether to take the edge off of holiday stress or a great meal pairing.
- December tends to have the best deals on wine – lower pricing combined with in store multi bottle purchase deals (ie, buy  6 bottle, save 10%) means you can buy better wines at an even better deal.
However, when choosing a wine for someone else, it can also be challenging. There are SO many wines to choose from and unless you know what your gift recipient’s favorite is, wine departments and wine shops can be intimidating. Here are a few tips to make giving the gift of wine is more fun than battling mall crowds:

1.      Choose your own favorite! This is my plan for this Christmas. I’ve tried a number of new wines this year both through work and through complimentary wine tastings. My own favorite this year is Erath Oregon Pinot Noir. I love all Pinot Noir but Oregon is certainly my top location for choosing one and Erath makes, in my opinion, the best for your buck. It is right in my gifting price range ($20+) and once I made the decision to buy a full case, I saved another 10%. Plus, if I have any bottles left over, I know they won’t go to waste!
Feel like upgrading? Most brands have a higher end of the wines you already love. Since I set my brand at Erath, I might purchase a Willamette Valley (pronounced Will-Am-It) or single vineyard. They also make a Pinot Gris for my friends who prefer white wine. This is not unique to Erath – check out your own favorite brand and see what else they’re making!

2.      Go classic or historicThere is nothing wrong buying well-known wines – especially historically famous wines! They’re sticking around for a reason. When I am giving a really special gift, I like to go for a wine people have heard of but have not necessarily had the opportunity to try. I love to see the look on a friend’s face when I hand them a bottle of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars – a pretty famous winery out of Napa known for beating the pants off the French in 1976 with their Cabernet Sauvignon! Although still best known for their Cabernet, they’re also making 2 Chardonnays, a Merlot and a Sauvignon Blanc.
Not into California wines? Check out Italy where there are wineries older than our country! This is a great option for to friend who loves to cook with wine. Keep an eye out for wines like Villa Antinori – a red blend made specifically to pair well with many different foods.
Feel like upgrading? Upgrading with Stag’s Leap can get pricey but for a real wine enthusiast or an extra special gift ask your local wine shop for more information on what wines they carry. Italian wines are fun to upgrade, too, check out Brunello, Borolo, or any other specialty grapes coming only out of Italy.

3.      Check out the listsEvery year a number of publications release a “Top 100” or something similar. Some people consider these lists a bit “pretentious” but I love reflecting on them when choosing a gift. If you have a friend who might go back and Google the wines you buy them these lists are an easy guide. Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, and Wine & Spirits all release these types of lists and you can find them by picking up the magazine or getting on their websites.

Final Tips- Don’t be intimidated! Ask questions to the people who work in the store, ask friends what kind of wine they like, ask me questions rights here and I will do my best to get back to you right away.
- Trust your instinct: These gifts should be authentic to you – the giver. When your friends and family open these bottles, they’ll be thinking of you.
- Don’t overly focus on price. There are great wines at all different price. If you find yourself spending less than intended, pick up some wine accessories like bottle openers, decanters, or aerators to go with it. If you keep finding items a bit higher than intended, wine shops have employees who can recommend something similar with a lower price.
#1 Tip: Have fun! Wine is about celebrating and connecting with the people around you. What better time than the holidays!?

Cheers!

A little more about The Cherry on Top Boutique!

Lindsay and I started TCOT boutique in May of 2012. We started it b/c our hobby of hair bow making had grown to a happy obsession.
In the 7months, we have been blessed with meeting so many wonderful women (and a few men) and lots of cute kiddos.
Many of these women have opened up their hearts to helping out the little guy (us!). By purchasing from us, attending events, commenting on status', taking pictures, sharing our business page w others, doing trades, giving advice, etc you are helping our small business grow.
We appreciate and are in awe by how many women put themselves out there to help. We fully intend on paying it forward by helping other woman- run local businesses succeed.
Here's to a great 2013! Cheers!
